SIMPLY THE ACTION

14.1  In Kannada, in general, the Verb is the last word in the sentence. In English, it is the second word, or the third word if auxiliaries (am, is, have been, has been etc) are there. Compared to the variety of forms the Verb takes in Kannada according to the number and gender of the Subject of the sentence, English Verb offers linguistically more comfort. In the Tense forms also English is simpler compared to Kannada Tense forms, because Kannada Verb may get appended on either side by a number of other things besides tense. As a result, the Verb could breathtakingly be long. Look at this one: ಆ ಪೈಂಟಿಂಗ್ ಒಂದೇ ವರ್ಷದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೀಗಾಗಬಹುದೆಂದುಕೊಂಡಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. (I) never thought that the painting would be like this just in a year) Of course, in the language of Malayalam a similar expression could be much longer! One can imagine what effort the Englishman has to take to say this without accent!

In Kannada, often it is possible to shorten or simplify the sentence by trimming the Verb or simply by dropping it. In modern Kannada speech and writing it is quite common. By examining the following three sentences and learning the usages that follow, you would feel at ease in the process of learning to speak and read Kannada.
